and "El Mercado", my favorite restaurant -- there were a couple of them. every now and then I think about moving back to texas solely for the food....

fun, fun!

hmmm... good places to go (besides those mentioned above) are:

The Daquiri Factory on 6th street is a great place for drinks

If you've never been, it's worth going to one of the Texas-style line-dancing clubs. There's several in town -- a pretty corny experience, from my perspective, but definitely worth going once, especially if you take a camera.

You should *definitely* go swimming in Barton Springs. Yes, yes, it's chilly at first, and some people will try to scare you off. But there are 80-year olds who go swimming there every day, year round, so it can't be too dangerous. Besides, it's a really fun place to go.

There are often interesting events put on by or at the University.

The "Austin Chronicle" is a free weekly newspaper that has listings and reviews of clubs, live music, restaurants, plays, movies, etc., and is the single best reference for someone either visiting or new to town.

Going to an "Austin Ice Bats" Hockey game is also a really fun experience, even for people who aren't really into ice hockey. Unfortunately, their last game of the season was a week or 2 ago.

There are also places in Austin where you can go in the evenings to watch the real bats (Austin has some bat colonies), but it's worth being careful, as some of these bats carry rabies.

It's definitely worth hiking to the top of Mt. Bonnell (don't worry, it's not too much of a climb) on a clear evening. Definitely something to do on a weeknight, as it tends to be pretty crowded on weekends.

I've also put a link on one of my entries to a site that has "101 Fun Things to Do in Austin if You're Visiting" or somesuch. It includes phone numbers and addresses and the like.

Hope you have a good time!

Amy's Ice Cream! oh man, the best ice cream I have ever had. They make their own ice cream and there are a lot of flavors and stuff you can get smushed into the ice cream. People who work there throw up the ice cream an catch it in cups and things of that sort. There at least two in Austin that I know of, one even has large marble cows a little ways behind it with a fountin. My mother used to take me there when I got good grades.
