Just to clarify the article, Battletech was actually a board game first going through a number of iterations before Mechwarrior (the role-playing addition) was released.
As mentioned elsewhere, Battletech was heavily influenced by japanese robot anime, so much so the very first version contained _very_ accurate representations of mechs from one cartoon (I can't remember which one unfortunately), so good in fact that Fasa had to change them to mechs of their own design in order to avoid a very expensive law suit.
I know longer have my first edition set so can't double check all the details
