Fascinating Mayan culture.

Thank you so much for sharing this with us.

As a little girl I read a book called "Gold of Peru". The early civilisations of Central and South America have always fascinated me.

I do not think I have ever read anything about the Mayan culture. Were they related to the ones of Chile and Peru? I wonder.

so much to learn and read about - so little time.

Thank you again

Hi Christiane,

Thanks for your thanks!

I've also long been fascinated by both Central and South American early civilisations. In fact I wrote an Entry on early Andean cultures: A21140443 though someone beat me to the Incas: A904259.

If there was any link between South and Central America, it was very limited - the distance alone would have been prohibitive (Mexico to Peru is roughly the distance from Britain to Turkey). The terrain between the two is virtually impassable even today, and the Mayans are on the wrong coast to reach Peru by sea. And the cultures are quite different, showing no clear signs of cultural exchange.

But some of the parallels are very strange, especially the conquest of the Inca and the Aztecs by the Spanish.

Dear GFord,

Thank you for your reply.

I am dead beat having just returned from Christmas shopping.
I hope I shall have more energy to read your extra references and your reply tomorrow.

I should have realised that the terrain was practically impassable - even today unless by aircraft.

what a strange inhospitable part of the worl;d. and yet they are in general very gentle people. I met someone from Ecuador once and she was a gentle super person. Or is Ecuador somwewhere else?
