h2g2 The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: Earth Edition

The last sentence in this Entry is both mis-spelled and somewhat misleading. Robert Smith never formally joined Siouxsie And The Banshees, nor did he ever leave The Cure.
What happened was that the Banshees' guitarist and drummer, respectively John McKay and Kenny Morris, quit the band after two dates of a UK tour in 1979. Smith, a friend of Siouxsie and the one remaining Banshee, bassist Steve Severin, hurriedly learned the band's set and stood in as guitarist to enable them to complete the tour, albeit with a few rescheduled dates. He went on to make an album, 1983's "Blue Sunshine", with Severin under the name of The Glove.
Incidentally, the replacement drummer on that ill-fated Banshees tour was Peter "Budgie" Clarke - who, unlike Smith, went on to become a fully-fledged Banshee. In fact, to this day he remains not only Siouxsie's musical partner in The Creatures, but also her husband.
So there's a surprisingly happy ending for a story about Goths.

It wasn't thatRobert Smith was a friend of Siouxie's when Mckay & Morris walked out of the Banshees in mid-tour, The Cure were actually the support band on Siouxie's tour. Which is why Fat Bob had at least a grasp of the music.

I saw them at the Brighton Centre, it was quite amazing to see Robert do a set as front man of the Cure and then appear as the guitarist in the Banshees. Two for the price of one for a RS fan like me!

The bad news is that Smith said he would not want to carry on as a 'rock star' after hitting 40 (last year) so this album could be the last. Let's hope he changes his mind.

Well, RS could have been Siouxsie's friend AND been on tour with her and her band, couldn't he?

'Pedant'? I never even picked you up on the way you mis-spelled 'Siouxsie'! But then, everyone always did get her name wrong...

OK I admit it. I spelled it wrong. That's what comes of posting messages at 2am and using names that have hardly crossed my lips for 15 years, never mind having to spell them.
Interesting reading the Goth section of h2g2 that the Cure seem to be put forward as the grandaddy of all goth bands. Am I the only one who finds this a bit odd? They may have had their goth moments, and worn black a lot, but they also produced some of the most happy and exhilarating three minute pop songs you're ever likely to hear. Have these kids never heard of Bauhaus?
