A Conversation for Father Damien of Molokai - Priest

Leper

Post 1

Titania (gone for lunch)

Thanks for an article with real facts instead of the horror descriptions usually provided by different medias.

12 years, before Father Damien showed signs of leper!

Today, in our 'modern' world people live in fear of leper, and in many countries leper settlements still exist, keeping the patients isolated.

I remember reacting with disappointment several years ago (hmmm, 17 years ago to be exact), when I watched a TV-show for children in England. It was some sort of science fiction series, and the crew found a ship drifting in space, thought to be abandoned. However, they discovered there were lepers on board, which made them scream and run for their life. Now what kind of picture does that give of leper? Medieval, I'd say...smiley - sadface

This is largely why it's now called "Hansen's Disease" rather than leprosy.

I still really like the Simpson's episode about it, though!
