Thank you hootoo!
For reasons which are slightly too long to explain here, on a fiction site elsewhere on the Web I havw "created" a South African female character. She's actually based on a very nice Afrikaans girl called Heidi, from Pietermaritzberg, who I worked and did other things with some years ago.
Some of the slang used here is known to me as Heidi would use it, but the rest is an absolute treaure-trove I can use in fleshing out my character Johanna and giving her more verisimilitude. If nothing else, it's a little more wholesome than a certain word spelt "v**ts**k" which she has been known to use in extremis!
BTW, I heard Ronnie Barker and Richard Beckinsale, in the umpteenth resceening of "Poridge", telling everybody to "naff off".
Is it true that this innoccuous-sounding pseudo-swearie (in English) is directly out of Afrikaans and a lot more potent in its own language?
