It may only be a horse race, but everybody in Australia stops everything for that 5 minutes on the second Tuesday in November each year.
Most of us do even better and start off with a long lunch. While always intending to go back to work after the race, the majority of us have trouble finding the office. All that champagne when we win the office sweep maybe?

I'd like to make a correction here that Melbourne Cup day is actually run on the 1st Tuesday in November, not the second Tuesday as stated in your paragraph!
