Since I have to write this so often, I hereby officially coin the new acronym: PSYTMO. Which stands for *Please Stop, You're Turning Me On*.

I'm thinking the article was hidden because this is a family site owned and run by the BBC. Some UK residents who pay for the BBC probably don't want their kids reading about masturbation here until they're old enough to understand it, in which case they'll probably be too distracted to be reading dictionaries.

There is some concern about anything related to adult content, from what I understand. However, the concern is problematic when other entries like "Internet Pornography" and "A Dominatrix and her Dog" have been cleared.

In general, the masturbation article is informative and gentle. It covers more the social side of the issue than the practical one. It is not a how-to article, and certainly doesn't include anything like a picture. A young child seeking sexual education or titillation would find the article boring and useless, and would likely go elsewhere.

*Possibly relevant bit of trivia*

The Internet Porn and Dominiatrix and her Dog entries have been added since the BBC bought h2g2, and since we've been up and running with no major problems for, oooh, a few months now, nobody's asked us to take them off. The entries on masturbation, however, were hidden when the Beeb were looking closely at the Edited Guide, and it's proving difficult to get Ed Pol round the table, 'cos they are *so* busy.

So don't take it personally that the masturbation entries are hidden while porn and dominatrix get in. The latter probably haven't been spotted by Ed Pol yet... so keep quiet.

As Peta says, though, we're working on it.
