Perhaps the short duration bursts are the result of alien space craft breaking into hyperspace!

Possibly not as daft (all respect paid) as it sounds. To access "hyperspace" or "warp" one would presumably have to produce a temporary artificial singularity (man/thing made black hole) to move space-time around around in a controllable (or dramatically satisfyingly uncontrollable for a good Hollywood movie kind of) way. This act of creation could quite possibly produce a short term GRB identical in signature as could be observed from natural phenomema.
