In my somewhat boring life I decided to answer, once and for all, the question about spilt red wine.
As the bottle falls, the cry goes up "salt" no "white wine" no "scrub it" no "don't scrub it" so I've done a test. I took a very small quantity of red wine (the rest was saved because I prefer to drink it) and lots of bits of cotton and some other materials. I dipped each piece of material in the wine and then tried the usual remedies. None of them work EXCEPT washing up liquid and water, which was far better than leaving it! So there you have it, and now you can really say with authority "NO NOT SALT OR WHITE WINE - don't you read H2g2?"
