This should be 'billion'! And, (being british) I haven't noticed adopting the US billion! As far as I am aware, we still treat a 'billion' as being 1million million. Or perhaps the change in meaning only applies to money?

Believe me, I have never ever ever adopted the American billion of "any large number we can think of but we'll call it a billion to make it sound impressive". A billion is a million million. "Bi" means 2, as in bicycle, biplane, bisexual, so it has to be a million million. Otherwise it doesn't make sense.
Anyone who disagrees frankly is wrong.

I live in London, and almost invariably a billion here means a "thousand million". About the only contexts the word is used in are when one is talking about money or population, and it's not in the least unusual to hear people say something like "the population of India is one billion".
