Pheroneous

A very good article if I may say so.

Coincidentally, I have just written about cement, part of the story of which involves the Erie & Hudson Canals. A particular type of cement was mined in NY State, but rather than bore you with the story here, you might like to find out for yourself, starting with a visit to http://www.widowjane.org Besides using the material in the construction of the canals, the cement was shipped down the canal system and used in the construction of New York City landmarks. Its a fascinating site, and contains much that will be of interest to you.

P.S. I should just make it clear that the website given above is just a starting point. The links from it will be of more interest than the story of Rosendale and its Cement.

This is a really fun to read and comprehensive article. Just one question: wasn't there another canal built roughly parallel that superseded the Erie Canal?

Miss Archy

Hi, thanks smiley - smiley Yes, there was another, larger, canal built to replace the Erie. They actually made use of some of the nearby rivers instead of building it completely from scratch. I'm not sure if there's a more proper name for it, but around here, it's called 'The Barge Canal'. It replaced the Erie, and is actually much larger in some sections.
