A Conversation for Empress Matilda
Matilda the tank

In WW2 the British army had a main battle tank that ended up being called the Matilda. Received wisdom had it that this relatively small but heavily armoured tank, which in its heyday delivered a lot of headaches to the Germans, got the name because it was reminiscent of a cartoon duck. it is held up today as an example of the British not quite getting the hang of giving tanks suitably martial names along the lines of Panther or Tiger - two of Matilda's contemporaries were called the Valentine and the honey. But after reading about this Matilda, I wonder: was this an example of a scholarly but unworldly person naming the tank after a fighting-minded former Queen, only to discover the majority of people simply did not get the historical referent, but did know about the cartoon duck? As I recall, wasn't there another Queen Matilda later on, wife of the ineffectual and weak Henry VI? she had to do some thinking and fighting too..
