A Conversation for Why the British Drive on the Left
Driving on the left

The malicious rumour I heard (which sounds plausible) is that it was the Romans who started us all driving on the left, for all the reasons given by other correspondents about swords in the right hand, shields on the left, etc. Similarly, the Japanese drive on the left - a product of the samurai culture with its emphasis on the sword?
The fact that the Romans were famous for their roadbuilding throughout Europe also lends weight to what I am insufficiently arrogant to call my theory.
I also heard that it was Napoleon who insisted on changing things throughout Europe. Sweden, I recall, changed over from driving on the left to the right in the 1960s. I don't know what that proves.
