Could you state those measurements in volumes please? I don't have a kitchen scale... Is that an Irish thing? I'm Canadian and I bake/cook in cup and teaspoons or ml.

It's a thing that evolved in Britain (and across Europe) where most people had access to weighing scales, either in their own homes or in the local bakehouse. The reason Americans and Canadians use volumes is because they didn't have that access in the early days of settlement so by experiment they found an alternative. Perhaps a few people still had scales but everyone had cups.

There are conversion tables but good luck trying to measure potatoes by volume.
