What alternate names do people have for umbrellas? My fiance uses "bumbershoot" exclusively. Is a "parasol" just an umbrella used as a sun-shade, or is there a difference in design?

brolly is fairly standard
"parasol" means "against the sun"
"parapluie", the french name for umbrella, means "against the rain"
parasols tend to be made out of a different material, that is not so water resistant as umbrellas but is better at reflecting the sun's radiation.

You can now get nice lined ones that will function as both parapluie and parasol
