A Conversation for Umbrellas

Umbrella's as Weapons

Bucephalus

Wasn't there a Russian weapon that took the shape of an umbrella? I believe it was used for assasinating defectors.

I always wanted one of these smiley - winkeye

I'm positive there have been James Bond, Mission: Impossible, or similar film and television treatments of dart guns and the like masquerading as umbrellas. The shape is just too perfect... Didn't the male in The Avengers (I forget his name) have some sort of gadgetry in his umbrella?

The Jedi's Queen

I think I saw a mystery show about a man who was poisoned from an umbrella. The assin had the point of the umbrella drilled out and put in some sort of poisoned ball that was injected by "accidently" poking the victim in the leg while walking by.

John Steed, yes. Some sort of bayonet I think. Quietly efficient, like Steed himself.

John Steed...the movie really didn't do him justice, but the teady bear suits were wonderful.
Wow, I've always wanted a Russian Umbrella Gun too!

The "Russian" assassin was a true story - but the guy was Bulgarian

Actually, it was an American umbrella armed with a Russian pellet containing the lethal poison Ricin. The victim was a Bulgarian named Georgi Markov.

There's a good summary (from a 1996 article) here: http://www.rferl.org/nca/features/1996/09/F.RU.960918155306.html

Thanx. That's undoubtedly right. Just that when I was in Bulgaria, it was the one thing (apart from wine and roses) that we ever conversed about

Salamander the Mugwump

I remember that. They made the ricin from caster oil beans didn't they?

Re Umbrellas as weapons..

Swordsticks, as they are more correctly known as, have been around since the eighteenth century, and probably earlier as they were used for surrepticious dulling!!!
