I'm perfectly willing to admit that I may be wrong, just as I'm perfectly willing to admit you may be wrong. Once again it comes down to perception. If the author was talking about the 1995 Hanshin/Awaji earthquake as being minor in regard to Japanese catastrophic earthquakes that destroy lives and property, that is how I perceived his statement. You may disagree. I await the author to state his intent.

I am simply saying what I have always said... a 6.9 is never minor, no matter what else may have happened. Comparing it with other disasters is like saying, "Geoff? Oh, he's not hurt. Sure, his arm got torn clean off, but he's been through much worse." The least nasty motorcycle wreck Eval Knieval was in still hurt him just the same whether it was his first or his 300th.

By every comparison we have... average quakes, total energy released, total damage done... Kobe was not minor, and cannot be considered as such.

And that's just a 6.9, which we have already established was not the final determination. It ended up in the 7s.
