Vesuvius - how active?

Is there any information on how active it is before you collect your stick?
I visited Pompii when I was 8 and had a recurring nightmare about Vesuvius for the next 4 years. I wouldn't go near it without knowing something about its current state.

Versuvious is curently dorment I believe. Or at least very inactive. Etna on the other hand is a major tourist attraction because it is so active. Some tourists have no sence of safety whatsoever.

Dormant - lying in wait?
The entry called it active, thats what bothers me. People take volcanoes for granted because they haven't blown recently.

Vesuvius is an active but currently dormant (waiting to go Kaboom) volcano that is waiting for its next major eruption, the last one was in the 40s or 50s and mass devastation was, luckily avoided.
The great eruption in 79AD was so strong that it levelled most of the buildings on Capri.
