Take the tourist bus from central Dublin and go round the castle with the audio guide. Lovely trip on a fine day and you get to learn interesting things about the furniture collection via a soothing Irish accent.

"Dublin Bus" run this service from the bus terminus by _the_ post office, and it leaves reasonably early in the morning, if memory serves me correctly.
There is also another company who do tours direct to the castle which is quicker but you don't get to see Howth head (subject of an as yet unapproved guide entry). This latter runs from the tourist office just off Grafton street at about 2pm.
