Do not neglect the fact that Windows installs itself with a default not to show known file extensions.
With the latest versions of Windowsm, the system accepts file names which may include a period. The result, files names like this.
virus.txt.vbx
show up in your file window or application file requester as
virus.txt
If you've been told that .txt files are all safe then you are a prime victim for a virus.
Disable this feature by going into Windows Explorer or any other utility that lets you set folder options, go to Tools, Folder Options, View and uncheck the box with the label reading Hide file extensions to known file types.
You will now see the full file name.
