The material world, sure. Wittgenstein speaks of the world as "the totality of facts, not things" -- there are plenty of non-material facts (is history an ensemble of matter? Or language?) and plenty of borderline cases.
Berkeley pointed out that matter cannot be something inert and lifeless, and that was long before the buzzing energy of subatomic particles was imagined.
