This may be what you were trying to get across, or it might be something else entirely, but there are people who think the universe will expand ad infinitum, but there is a finite amount of space at the moment.

That is just one theory.
It says that at the time of the big bang, the space inhabited by the nugget of matter was all the space that there was. Since space has been expanding for a finite amount of time at a finite rate since that time, the follow-up to that is that there is only so much space.

The universe? A blackhole?
Well, I guess it's possible, but it seems a bit unlikely, as then there'd be black holes within black holes.
But, hey, 500 years ago I'd be astonished at hearing you say the earth is flat. So, anythings possible.
Of course, that's partly the problem.
