Being from Watford, I can describe St. Albans as "quaint" with a faintly patronising tone
One memory from my teenage years was playing cricket at Gorehambury House; a gorgeous building used, I believe, as one of the minor stately homes in "Brideshead Revisited" on t'telly. The drive from the road to the house was almost as long as the journey to St. Albans, but when we got there we weren't allowed in the house, oh no - we had to change in portakabins round the side. However, the fixture was always eagerly anticipated because the ground had sight screens (dead posh), and it was the only venue where matches were regularly interrupted by pheasant wandering across the pitch.
Thanks you for your article. Most enjoyable.
