A Conversation for The Plectrum
Dick Dale

"One of the many rituals of a rock concert is that the guitarists will throw their picks into the crowd."
I saw Dick Dale several years back at a local rock club. Dale is best known these days for composing and playing the main theme from the movie "Pulp Fiction," the opening piece called "Misirlou", a surf rock classic. The place was packed with his fans, wearing their "Dick Heads" caps and T-shirts, so I couldn't get very close to the stage. But it looked like he was holding his guitar out to the audience and they were grabbing picks from the head, apparently equipped with a Pez-dispenser style pick holder.
It was quite a show. But judging by the audience reaction to the good opening act, if your band gets asked to open for Dale, I suggest you decline ...
