when wanting to bivvi up on the minimum of eqipment I can recomend the army issue sleeping system- this comprises of sleeping bag, compression sack, gortex bivi bag/sleeping bag cover and optional poncho.
how it works:
1. remove sleeping bag and cover from compression sack
2. stuff sleeping bag in cover
3. stuff yourself in sleeping bag in cover.
4. if it's a inclement night then you can crawl to the bottom of your bag, pull the hood over and shut out the rest of the world.
the poncho:
has a small hole in middle complete with hood so it can be worn over yourself and rucksack when walking. The hood can be closed off to provide a waterproof shelter, simply peg two sides of the shelter down whist securing the other two (slightly elevated) to a tree or bench. Then put yoursef underneth it.
In my opinion it's not bad but not essential ether!
