A Conversation for Operating Systems

An OS does a lot more than play mediator...

Without the OS programs, or viruses, wouldn't even run. A computer doesn't do much anything without an operating system.

I disagree. I have an old Apple II that has no operating system. I have to key the programs into the machine's built-in debugger in order to have it run anything. Computers of old, also, did not need operating systems: the programmers actually keyed their programs right into the machinery and executed them without any need for a platform program (OS). Your statement might be correct, however, if you had said that MODERN computers and their programs cannot function without operating systems. Anyway, I'm nitpicking, but this is my opinion on the subject.
