A Conversation for How To Pick Up A Porcupine - A Personal Perspective
porcupine copulation

I suspect that the image you saw of "intimate" porcupines was a false one. As a zoologist I have studied the mating habits of a number of species, and I find the image of 2 porcupines lying end to end a bit preposterous. I have never seen the mating habits of a porcupine, but I have observed Hedgehog copulation. As you said in the article porcupines can relax the quills. The female hedgehog does the same thing during intimacy. The male still has to be very careful not to be poked, but the male of the species is surprisingly well endowed to compensate for the distance he must remain from his partner. I suspect that porcupine mating occurs much the same way. This might make an interesting guide entry. So to make a long story short (too late) the old joke is true, porcupines make love very carefully.
