A Conversation for Georg Elser: Heroic German Anti-Nazi

Too bad Mr. Elser wasn't an electrician rather than a carpenter, with a remote control device rather than a simple timer ...
I'm a little confused by this:
"As it happened, Hitler arrived slightly early, made a shorter speech than expected, and then left. The bomb blast killed eight of the old comrades, none of whom were Nazi leaders. They had left with Hitler."
If they left with Hitler, how did they die while Hitler survived?

Good point. For 'They', substitute 'These'. The leaders had left with Hitler. The 'old comrades' were left behind and killed.
