Having had the pleasure (and it is one) of meeting a number of Newfoundlanders I would like to add a couple of points to your wonderful entry. One is quite a few seem to have left 'The Rock', as they fondly call the island of Newfoundland, and the other is most of them love 'The Rock' and want to go back. At least for regular visits.

My impression of those I have met are of nice easy-going people. Once you get to know them better you realize that under that easygoing exterior is a toughness and a ruggedness matched by very few.

You are correct...Newfounlanders have been migrating all over the planet. Some blame it on the economy, but the truth is that we are trying to take over the planet. SHHH! Don't Tell Anybody! smiley - winkeye

I am personally a Newfoundlander and am pround of it. Many Newfies have been out-migrating but yes, it is due to lack of work, not plans of world domination.

Another note that you should know if you are planning on visiting our weather-scattered province. Newfies don't generally mind if you tell them "Stupid Newfie Jokes," but some will get slightly aggitated and may make attempts to end conversation. Even though offense is not usually taken, it is not advised to do this when trying to make a good first impression. Any Newfoundland-related questions or travelling tips, just ask.

It's been quite a while since I logged in here. I forget people might be leaving messages!

The term "Newfie" should probably be avoided. Many locals consider it to be offensive. "Newf" and "Newfoundlander" are acceptable.

We are enjoying a dramatic increase in tourism since September 11...due in no small part to the 25,000 people diverted to the provinces airports when the US closed it's airspace. Many of them have returned early since, and are promoting Newfoundland to their countrymen. As usual, we welcome all!

And yes, out-migration for work purposes is the "real" reason for us spreading out. I still hold that there is a plot for world domination though. Don't worry. We'd be benevolent rulers. %}
