Concerning the D line

Actually the Sodium D line IS a double line - but I don't know what kind
of equipment is needed to see that.

I know there are two sodium D lines close to each other, this was based on an actual experiment that I performed where they were supposed to be focused in the same place, giving the appearence of one line. However only one of the collimators in the room was working, giving the appearence of two where there should have been one.
Thus my partner and I got to do the experiment on the same piece of aparatus, making the experiment more successful for all concerned.

Theoretically all you need to see the D line is a sodium lamp (a yellow street lamp will do) and a prism. Use the prism in the same way you do to get a spectrum from sunlight, and it will separate the light into a number of lines, the brightest of which will be the two yellow D-lines. In practise, however, these two are incredibly close together and you really need a spectrometer to see them properly.
