I noticed that many of the streets of the Upper West Side in New York City are lined with gingko trees.

Your remarks about the New York Ginkos prompted a thought. I have heard that Ginko Bilobas were planted around Temples in the Far East as, when they are heated, say by the fire in the building whch they surround, they give off moistture which helps quell the fire.
Is this just an "old wives tale". Can anyone enlighten me?

I've never heard this. It certainly sounds like an old wives' tale. Why would a Ginkgo have any more moisture in it than any other sort of tree?

This example of "Keep him quiet" information was told to me when quite a young boy.
How impressionable I must have been. But at least my memory's good!
