..and how come you can put in the accents? Do you have a Spanish keyboard? I can put in the accents if I am using word by typing control, apostrophe then the letter, but it doesn't seem to work in email or h2g2 forum replies.

Well, on Win 95, click on the Start menu, to Programs, then Accessories and find the Character Map, which lists codes for all the international letters and a number of symbols like the ¡ or the ¿
To type them in simply requires you to hold down the Alt key and type in a 4 digit number on the numerical keypad.
Eg
Alt + 0225 = á
Alt + 0233 = é
Alt + 0243 = ó
Alt + 0161 = ¡
Alt + 0191 = ¿
