A Conversation for Fencing

On Rules and Penalties

My memories of competitive fencing are a few years old, but I agree that I don't recall a point penalty for stepping off the side. Regardless, such things should be sorted out by true scholars of the rules. When I have questions like this, I usually consult the Unites States Fencing Association rule book. You can find a copy of the 1999 rules for competition at [URL removed by moderator]stored as a .pdf formatted document. I hope this helps.

I think the definitions of yellow and red cards are slightly mixed up. The rule book I fence to says that you give a metre of ground for stepping off the side of the piste but get a red card for stepping off the end of the piste. It appears the Monty Python 'Run Away' thing doesn't work in fencing smiley - smiley
