Talking Point: What Should We Do With h2g2?
Created | Updated Nov 22, 2007
h2g2 is a well-respected, much-loved website. This is because the h2g2 Community organises itself so well and generally behaves in an exemplary fashion. Newbies to h2g2 are given the warmest of welcomes and we would like to think the whole vibe of the site is second-to-none. It's an intelligent place where people collaborate with each other. Folk have even been known to think for themselves while users actually construct whole sentences with real grammar and everything.
There's an underlying spirit of playful enquiry into the phenomena of all aspects of human existence on h2g2, very much in the sprit of Douglas Adams himself. It's a philosophical sort-of place. You could say it's where art meets science. We've got all sorts here and people do genuinely make friends on h2g2.
But technically, in terms of design and in what we can actually do onsite, we've stalled a bit and for various reasons. The 'competition' out there in Internetland has caught up and then some. The online world is a fast-moving place and while our move to the BBC should be eternally lauded (because the BBC undoubtedly saved the site), h2g2 has not been a priority in terms of developing its infrastructure and features. BBC online is a massive operation and things don't happen quite the same way as they might if we were a small, independent company. We survived, we're robust, but we haven't really changed much. However, we - you - have inspired a lot of people within the BBC; and DNA, the engine and technical nous which underpins our website, has populated other sites within the BBC which has added great value to the general BBC online experience.
If - and it's a big fat old if - if, we could develop h2g2 now to take it forward, to really make it something new and groundbreaking again without compromising its essential vibe, its community spirit and collaborative nature, what do you think we should do? How would you like to see h2g2 develop, in an ideal world, with no money constraints etc? Let your imagination run wild.
In the forward-thinking spirit of Douglas Adams, how can we move h2g2 forward, make it technologically pioneering again?
In your ideal wishlist, what would you like to see on h2g2?
What would you like to do with your Personal Space that you can't do now?
Do you think a name change would affect the site? What would you change the name to?
What do you think about h2g2 becoming, in conjunction with the Edited Guide, a more obvious place where kindly internet geeks interact with kindly BBC geeks to swap ideas, software, coding etc?
Would you like much more say in how your page looked? Or the way the front page/the whole site looked?
Collaboration is key to h2g2: would you be interested in collaborating on musical projects, film etc? Stuff you create at home but then swap and develop here?
Do you use social networking sites, such as Facebook or myspace? Do you think we can learn from them?
