A Conversation for Dentists

Why is it that dentists insist on having a conversation with you when they've got your mouth filled with dentistry implements?
Or is it just my dentist who does this...

My dentist sometimes asks me questions when he's got my mouth filled... but then he catches on, when I don't answer.

My dentist waits until he's got a sharp tooth-prodding implement in my mouth then invariably asks if I've been on holiday anywhere nice.
What really worries me is when they check your teeth, and say stuff for the nurse to write down. It's something like:
'Okay, okay, okay, partially decayed, okay, partially decayed, okay, okay....'
I want to know what 'Partially decayed' actually means. Does it mean that half my teeth are about to fall out? If so why doesn't he suggest that I brush my teeth more or something?

My dentist usually expresses it this way: "2, 4, 3, 5, 5, 5..."
I have to wonder if "5" means "5/10ths of the way toward falling out".

What's really interesting is when they start saying:
'Okay.... hmm.... interesting... what happens if I do this? ... Oops! Nurse, pass the anaesthetic.... never mind, it'll grow back... I think....

MY orthodontist uses lots of appliances in my mouth, including wire cutters (no! I'm not joking! I wear fixed braces), and thinks I am deeply engrossed in the latest South African politics. Whatever you do, DO NOT NOD OR SHAKE YOUR HEAD. Any sharp head movements will be good cause for decapitation.
Luckily I have no fillings but one of my teeth has somehow moved into the wrong place. It is a canine tooth, directly next to my front tooth!
