...before I read the Terry Pratchett book, "The Wee Free Men". I thought he made it up - didn't realise it was such a widespread character in folk myths around the world!

V. interested to read that this is such a widespread myth. I thought it was a local invention in Lancashire, where my mum's family lived, and had assumed it had been invented to stop children from playing near the canal.
