I think yuppies, contrary to your footnote, derives from 'Young Urban Professional'. This, in the USA, led to Blacks of the same general class and with the attitude generally attributed to Yuppies, being referred to as Buppies. Yuppies has come to be a negative term, usually applied to others than oneself or one's crowd, by even the most clearly yuppie folk and now denotes someone who has to have the latest opinions, toys, cars, etc., and who is shallow and driven by one-upping the Joneses, and who has a certain heartlessness toward the less fortunate.
