INTRODUCTIONI have decided it is time. It is time that the people of the world should know that there is life on the south west tip of the United Kingdom. Oh I know you don't believe me and you will refuse to change your mind but hopefully this Guide Entry should change your mind.
The South West: General Facts:
1 - It is situated in the south west (oddly enough) of The United Kingdom.
The south west starts to the left of an imaginary line drawn from bristol down to the south coast in a rougly vertical way.
3 - There are usually four counties included in the term "South West" these are Cornwall, Devon, Somerset and Dorset.
4 - Each county has a different identity with different customs and specialities.
5 - Each county has a different sight to see.
Facts about The Counties:CornwallCornwall has many Gardens to offer. It has a mild climate generated by a warm flow of water from the Gulf of Mexico. This allows exotic plants which could not be grown at this latitude to be grown. These include palms, tree ferns and in one case pineapples. (see below).
Cornwall also offers stunning beaches and tall cliffs. It is popular for surfers as the waves are gernerated in the Atlantic and hence are large and powerful.
Cornwall is also famous for its pasties. Thgese were used by miners to portect their lunch but now we eat the pastry as well.
DevonDevon also gets the warm water and mild weather. The south coast of Devon is known as the English Riveria and includes places such as Torquay and Torbay. Devon has one unique attraction, Dartmoor. This takes up the vast amount of Devon and is mainly barron and wild. The army use it as a training area. This is a sight to see.
Somerset
This is further east and has a different climate. Its winters are not so mild but being mainly landlocked it has glorious summers without the coastal rain. Somerset has to offer and major city, Bristol and fabulous attractions such as the City of Bath and Stonehenge.
DorsetThis again has a differnt climate and weather patterns and hence the scenery is different.
Tourism: Places to go: Sights to see
1 - Cornwall:1 - Gardens. There are many Gardens to see. Recommended ones are in my view are Antony House and Gardens (Rame Peninsula), Mount Edgecumbe House and Gardens (Rame Peninsula), The Eden Project (St. Austell) and Trelisk. Also recommened is the incredible gardens, The Lost Gardens Of Heligan. Amazing.
2 - Beaches. There are many beaches. Newquay is very popular, but Whitsand Bay is also very good. But there are many small coves which are unpolltued and quiet with the whole beach to yourself.
3 - Moorland. There is Bodmin Moor and headlands which are close to moorland. The best of these headlands are The Lizard and Nare Head, but there are many attractive headlkands to see.
4 - Scenery. The scenery is varied and amazing. Froim headland to moorland to rolling hills and quiet lanes. The best way to explore Cornwall if that is what you wanto do, is to expore off the beaten track. These areas are unspoilt and hold manyt surprises. I recommend cycling or walking as the best way to expore as most of the roads are unfit for cars and when cycling or walking i think you appriciate the surroundings better.
5 - The Sea. Sailing and canoeing are very popular, along with fishing which as well as a hobby is a way of life. There are many fishing villages situated in quant little coves. These are rich with life and a difenite sight to see. Again going off the beaten track will reveal more of the real culture and not the tourist culture. Some recommended places to see are Polperro and Cawsand (Rame Peninsula).
6 - Attractions. There are many attractions to see in Cornwall. This is because Tourism accounts for most of Cornwall's income so money is put into tourist things. Attractions is one of these. One of the main attractions are gardens (see above). Others are theme parks. My recomenedations for any age group are Flambards, Goonhilly Earth Station ad Lands End. For younger age groups there are the above and Dobwalls. There are others equally as good but in my view these are the best. There are wildlife parks and "zoos" which are also very good to see.
2 - Devon:
1 - Gardens.
2 - Beaches.
3 - Moorland.
4 - Scenery.
5 - The Sea.
6 - Attractions.
