Book Legolas vs Movie Legolas

What a comparison. smiley - erm

The movie Legolas has been called 'a pansy' 'a wimp' 'totally gay' 'comic relief' and a number of other insulting names, or intended to be insulting.

The book Legolas was the wisest member of the Fellowship except for Gandalf. He was in no way comic relief, and was a strong fighter.

Every member of the Fellowship, in the books, was treated equally and justly.

In the movies, the plot focused on Frodo, Sam, Aragorn, Merry, and Pippin. Legolas and Gimli were largely comic relief, and Legolas did cool CG stunts, whereas Viggo Mortensen (Aragorn) insisted on doing all his own stunts. In my opinion, they over-coolified Legolas in the movies, made him too cool and fan-servicey.

No Matter how the book explains characters you get your own image on the characters but in the movie you see the characters and what they look like for me the book was cool because Legolas was brave and intelligent, but in the movie Orlando Bloom was hot with blond hair and Blue eyes Im not complaining.smiley - loveblush

Yes, Legolas in the movie is very pretty. But Aragorn's better. In my opinion, of course.

Not sure I agree here. Legolas in the book was old and like all elves was wise etc. But Aragorn was a lot more world-wise (if that is a real english word smiley - erm). Aragorn has traveled a lot, has huge amounts of knowledge that is mostly forgotten elsewhere (from the rivendel library). Legolas always struck me as someone who, for most of his life had lived in the protective kingdom of his father.

All right, I'll concede. smiley - smiley And the word you want for Aragorn is wordly-wise, I think. However, Aragorn is worldly-wise, Gandalf is wizardly-wise, and Legolas is Elvishly-wise. So they're all wise.

The book Legolas /was/ a lot more poetic than the movie Legolas. This may have something to do with Orlando Bloom's acting. Not that he's a /bad/ actor, per se, just that perhaps it takes an extraordinary actor to do Legolas justice, not merely a good one.

Hmm

I personaly think that it was a challenge to potray any of the elves in a film, especially as they seem to live in two worlds at once and are very beautiful.
Plus as many of us humans as possible had to identify with and be in awe of them for the charactors to be accepted.
This I think was done quite well, using both beautiful scenes and sounds.
As for how Legolas was portrayed I already had an impretion of him and so didn't think much about it as he wasn't focused on so much.
I certainly didn't think he was a pansy but I suspect most of his wise remarks etc were eddited out of the script as Aragorn and Gandalf's wisdom was more central to the plot.

Hmm

Just watched the film again....
..Still don't think Legolas is a wimp, But I did notice that because he and Aragorn are old friends he is looking out to make sure Aragorn is okay, where maybe he might have otherwise said/done something. They all pull their weight in the fight scenes..

Just a thought.smiley - smiley
