I'd go so far as to say that even baby (not hatchlings; haven't seen those) alligators are a decidedly black tinge as well. Ask anyone who has tried to photograph one, from about 6 feet away, mind you, and then puzzled over the photo, trying to spot it in the black water.
Maybe when they come out they're different-colored, but they turn black reeeeeeeeeeaaaally quickly.
