Jewelery Quarter

In the centre of Birmingham is the Jewlery Quarter. It's a throw back to the days when Birmingham was a major centre of Jewellers, however some still survive and if you want some custom designed adornmant this is still one of the places to head to in England.

And there are currently plans for major redevelopment there... If it goes ahead it will mean more housing within walking distance of the City Centre, and close to St Paul's square which has good bars and restauraunts. On the other hand, housing will make it harder for the jewellers because of planning regulations...

I don't think it will cause too many problems, since jewellery making isn't a particularly obnoxious industrial process to live next to. There are plenty of other people who should be worried, there are a lot of metal work factories that would make pretty nasty neighbours.

On the subject of good bars and restaurants, try the Mongolian bar.
My only concern is that while I am away from Brum this wonderful but hard-to-spot bar/restaurant may lose custom and disappear. I still want to go back there some day.
Good variation on the theme of Chinese food! And fairly cheap beer pitchers...
