We frequently faced this problem during my childhood. There are two solutions we commonly used:
1) Kids get a sixth, parents get a quarter. One of the parents cuts and you get what you're given.
2) The pieces of cake (or portions of crumble, or similar) are less than a fifth of the total. Those who want a small portion can say so. Those who want more after the initial shares have been devoured split the remainder equally.
