A Will-o-the-wisp is a spirit that haunts graveyards and marshes, trying to entice people to their death, or, more scientificaly, glowing methane gas emited by decomposing bodies and rotting plant matter in marshes. Hence the idea that a will-o-the-wisp indicated a vampire's tomb or grave.

Specifically, it is the spirit of a baby that dies before it has been baptised, or at least so local legend has it.
