The MP for Salisbury, Robert Key has written to the Culture Secretary to ask that the Govt consider recommending the Cathedral and medieval core of the city for World Heritage Site status.
This coincides with this year's 750th Anniversary celebrations of the cathedral's consecration.
There are currently only two cathedralsin the UK - Durham and Canterbury, and two city centres - Bath and Edinburgh - which have World Heritage Site status.
Mr Key says that, "Salisbury has something they don't. The Cathedral Close has the finest range of English domestic architecture anywhere in the country..... We have something no other cathedral city has, and that's the medieval chequerboard street pattern in the city centre".
