A Conversation for 'The Secret of NIMH' - the Film
The Book (some spoilers)

I really liked the book as a child. It picked up the clever animals concept of many childrens books, but then went on to fit this into a fairly plausible sci-fi scenario: the animals are intelligent because they are the products of a genetic engineering experiment which made them sufficiently intelligent to escape from the lab. This gave the author a hook to introduce some fairly deep issues: behind the front plot of Mrs Frisby is the plot of the labrat civilisation: should they carry on stealing electricity from humans or build their own independent civilisation in the wilderness?
I'm not unduly surprised to hear that its been made into a second-rate film. Films like this can never capture the deep concepts of the book.
Paul.
