Proper phonetics

Something that annoys me in english language traveller's books is the lack of proper pronouciation guidance.

Berlitz, Lonely Planet, whatever - all have the same kind of prononuciation guidance as in this entry. Rubbish! Phonetics are way much better to get the correct way of how to say a work in a foreign language.

Hi DQ - I agree entirely. I only used that pronunciation guide in this entry because the entry is about Berlitz (I think I described it as 'idiosyncratic' somewhere - a euphemism for 'downright weird') I think it was designed by an American, as it seems to fit an American English accent better than British English.

Guess proper phonetics might be too hard for the average american brain to figure out... smiley - winkeye

Mr DQ, native english speaker, and with a keen interest in foreign languages just now amuses me with an English-Swedish travellers guide. I hardly can figure out how to pronounce my own native tongue which I've spoken almost fifty years from that book! smiley - weird
