A Conversation for Stop-motion Animation Programmes
Hooray for Bagpuss!

Bagpuss is quite simply the finest children's programme ever made. I can't quite explain why. Maybe it's the narrator's paternal voice, maybe it's the wonderful games the mice play with Yaffle, maybe it's the Marvellous Mechanical Mouse Organ.. I think the most probable reason is that it is so *formulaic*. That's what children love. They want to sit down in front of the telly and feel clever because they know what's coming next, but they also want it to be a bit different every time. I don't have kids, but I can still remember feeling exactly that way at the age of seven, so I know what I'm talking about.
Only 13 episodes? Really?? Such a shame.
Mr. Postgate, you are a wonderful, wonderful chap.
