Sawdust is really amazing isn’t it? For something so ordinary it has many uses.
One other that is in my opinion the coolest (pun intended) is the fact that when you mix it with water (14% sawdust) and then freeze it, it becomes pykrete. Pykrete is much stronger and harder that ice and it can withstand a blow from a hammer when normal ice would shatter. You can shoot a bullet at the pykrete and it will deflect it.

the chappie who invented it wanted to make battleships out it during the 1st world war, didn't he?

The man who wanted to make a battleship from it was named Pyke (though he did not invent it) and he is the one who shot a bullet at it. It ricocheted off of it and went just behind the leg of the man he was trying to convince to make the ship. 
The person who invented it is not known, but we know they were New Yorkers. Max Perutz, a molecular biologist, made some improvements on it and he is also commonly called its inventor.
Yes, it was during WWII.
