Dictionary use and non-phonetic languages

I agree with the original posting that reading a favorite book and looking up the meanings until you've got it solid is a good way to learn a language. However the language I am studying is Mandarin. This language uses symbols rather than phonetic words therefore a disctionary is rendered impossible to use. Yes, some allow for pin yin, a romanization of the language, b ut even here there are difficulties.

"The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is a wholly remarkable book. It has been compiled and recompiled many times and under many different editorships. It contains contributions from countless numbers of travellers and researchers."
